However, Samsung wants to change that. Dubbed “Samsung DeX”, the consumer electronics giant has released a device that turns its flagship smartphones Galaxy S8/S8+ and Note8 into fully blown workstations. Dex short for Desktop Experience is a lightweight circular device weighing 230g that connects Samsung smartphone to a monitor, keyboard and mouse in a way that gives you a desktop-like experience. Samsung teased Dex at the launch of the S8/S8+ earlier this year. The device comes with its own built-in cooling fan to keep your phone from overheating when using applications. It also features an Ethernet port so you can connect it to a router, an HDMI port for connecting to a big screen monitor, a USB 2.0 port for external storage and USB Type-C. Samsung says your phone can continue charging while docked to DeX device. The Samsung DeX has a wide variety of supported productivity, communication and entertainment apps which you are already used to from the Google Play store. Samsung has specifically optimized productivity apps such as Microsoft Office suit which includes Microsoft Word/Excel/Powerpoint/Onenote/Onedrive/Outlook as well as Adobe creativity apps like Adobe photoshop lightroom, Adobe photoshop express and mix. Technically all Android apps such as Spotify, Skype, Google services (Gmail, Search, Chrome, Youtube) should be able to work with Dex on a bigger screen. According to Samsung, you can still continue using your smartphone even when it’s plugged into the DeX Station. Phone calls, text messages and settings are all accessible from the taskbar on your monitor. Perhaps what makes this possible is the all powerful Qualcomm 835 processor that runs on Samsung’s flagship devices. The Qualcomm 835 processor features Gigabit LTE modem, an Octa core Kryo 280 with Clock speeds of up to 2.45 GHz, Adreno 540, supports 4K Ultra HD, at 60 FPS, Integrated Wi-Fi Integrated Wi-Fi, NFC, Bluetooth 5.0 and Qualcomm Quick Charge 4.0 technology. This mobile beast beast is comparable to Intel core i5/7 series which power desktop computers and laptops. Samsung wants to blur the lines between Smartphones and desktop computers so that your phone can turn into a powerful computer anytime anywhere by simply connecting it to a bigger screen and wireless keyboard and mouse.
